Dining

Dim Sum at Tsing Yi (青衣城)

For those who want some experiences in Hong Kong Dim Sum, you may try it in Tsing Yi Complex. Actually Dim Sum is considered a lunchtime experience, however most restaurants now serve throughout the day and we decided to take it as our breakfast. We took MTR to Tsing Yi station in the morning about 9am, we could only do some window shopping at the complex as most of the shops were still yet to open for business.

We took Dim Sum at the "稻香" restaurant in the Tsing Yi complex, we're required to register and take our number and waited for about 20mins for our turn. The restaurant was crowded and we have to share the table with other people. The restaurant was comfortable and clean, the dim sum was delicious and not so oily, the price was also resonable, it was only HKD75 for our dim sum breakfast.

Dinner at Temple Street (油麻地 - 庙街)
You may also consider to have dinner at Yau Ma Tei Temple street for the famous claypot rice (煲仔饭)and fried oyster with duck egg (蠔饼). (Highly recommended!!) It was not expensive but very delicious, we enjoyed the food and surely will come back for this for the next visit to HK.

Octopus card

In Hong Kong, the Octopus card is widely used for various transportation includes Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Citybus Limited and Star Ferry.

During the stay at Hong Kong, we bought a special Sold Octopus Card at the airport, it is called the Airport Express Travel Pass which is very suitable for tourists. The Airport Express Travel Pass costs HKD300 which offers 2 ways Airport Express trip and three days unlimited trips on the Subway Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line, Tseung Kwan O Line, Tung Chung Line and Disneyland Resort Line.

There is another Airport Express Travel Pass that cost HKD220 which only offer 1 way Airport Express trip and three days unlimited trips on the mentioned subway lines.

The Airport Express Travel Pass contains HKD50 of refundable deposit, you can get back the money after you return the Octopus Card at the Airport Express Travel Pass counter.

Central-Mid-levels escalators (中環至半山自動扶梯)

The Central-Mid-levels escalators (中環至半山自動扶梯) in Hong Kong is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. It is 800 meters long and consists of 20 single-direction escalators and three moving sidewalks.

It starts from the Hang Seng Bank HQ in Central, it runs through Cochrane Street between Queen's Road Central and Lyndhurst Terrace, then it runs along Shelley Street (些利街). It will take about 20 mins to finish the whole trip, but you can shorten the time by walking while the escalator is moving.

The escalator bisects the following streets/roads:

  • Des Voeux Road Central (德輔道中)

  • Queen's Road Central (皇后大道中)

  • Stanley Street (士丹利街)

  • Wellington Street (威靈頓街)

  • Gage Street (結志街)

  • Lyndhurst Terrace (擺花街)

  • Hollywood Road (荷里活道)

  • Staunton Street (士丹頓街)

  • Elgin Street (伊利近街)

  • Caine Road (堅道)

  • Mosque Street (摩羅廟街)

  • Mosque Junction (摩羅廟交加街)

  • Robinson Road (羅便臣道)

  • Conduit Road (干德道)
The system runs only at a single direction at one time. From Monday to Saturday, it runs from Mid-Levels to Central from 6am to 10am and then runs in the opposite direction from 10am to midnight. On Sundays and public holidays, it operates from Central to Mid-Levels from 6am to midnight.

To get there, we got off at Central MTR Station (Exit C) and walked passed Hang Seng Bank HQ and and just follows the signboards for the direction to the escalators.

Besides serving as one of the important transportation in Hong Kong, tourist can use it to access to some of the tourist attraction and also to restaurants, bars, and shops.

On each of the street/road the escalators passes, you can find that there is entrance to the road/street, often on both sides of the street/road.

There is also information signboard that give directions to some of the tourist attraction at the entrance/exit of the road that the escalators passed.

By following the direction to Man Mo Temple, we walked for about 15 mins to reach the destination, along the way there is still some information signboards, so you do not need to worry whether you're lost.

Information signboard also showing the direction to Dr. Sun Yat Sen Museum and Jamia Mosque.

After visited some of the tourist attraction, we went back to the escalator and continued until the Mid-Levels. To go down back to Central, you can either choose to take bus, taxi or on foot.

Victoria Peak & The Madame Tussaud's wax museum

Victoria Peak (太平山) is a mountain located in the Hong Kong Island, it is the highest mountain (altitude 552 m) on the island but not in the entirety of Hong Kong. The Peak is a major tourist attraction offering the spectacular views covers central Hong Kong and Victoria Harbour. To reach to Victoria Peak, you may consider to take Peak tram from the Golden Road Peak Tram Terminus or by taking buses from the Central (Pier 7) or minibus from MTR. We chose to take the Peak tram ride to the Victoria Peak. By taking the J2 Exit of Central MTR Station, we walked for about 15 mins to the Garden Road Peak Tram Terminus, there were some signage showing the direction to the Peak tram terminus after the J2 Exit.

At the Peak Tram Terminus, there are a few ticket packages you might consider to purchase as buying this package is more economic. We bought "Two Way Peak Tram and Madame Tussaud’s" tickets for about HKD160 per person.

The Peak Tram runs every day including Sundays and Public Holidays, between 7:00 am and midnight. The tram departs every 15 minutes. I would suggest to sit on the right side by the window when going up or left side by the window when going down, you would see the fascinating view along the journey.

The tram will stop at the Peak Tower on the Peak, if you want to go to the Sky Terrace, just take the escalators up to the highest floor. Ticket is needed to enter to the Sky Terrace, it cost HKD 20 per person. You might also consider to buy the package which include the Sky Terrace entry when you're at the Garden Road Peak Tram Terminus, I believe it would be cheaper if it is included into the package.

Sky Terrace is the highest viewing platform that offers a 360 degree view of Hong Kong.

View of
山頂-獅子亭 Lion Pavilion, Victoria Peak from the Sky Terrace.

After some cold air and photos at the Sky Terrace, we went to the Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The Madame Tussaud's wax museum is also located at the Peak Tower level P1.

You might also plan for some walk on the Peak, along the way to 山頂-獅子亭 Lion Pavilion, Victoria Peak you might see some people selling souvenir and paintings.
